Fred Akers was a college football coach who had successful tenures at several universities, including the University of Wyoming, Purdue University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He was born on February 17, 1938, in Blytheville, Arkansas, and began his coaching career in the early 1960s.
Akers is best known for his time as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns football team from 1977 to 1986. During his tenure at Texas, he led the team to three Southwest Conference championships and five bowl game appearances. He had a winning record at Texas, finishing with a record of 86-31-2.
In addition to his success at Texas, Akers also had successful coaching stints at Wyoming and Purdue. He was inducted into the Texas Longhorns Hall of Honor in 2004.
